– 5 sections (abstract, introduction, materials/methods, results, conclusion/discussion
– Third person impersonal
– No “flowery” language
– No opinions regarding the aesthetic of the experiment
– Title that is descriptive
Abstract:
– Summary
– Statement of Purpose
– Brief description of methods
– Summary of data
– Conclusion
– NO MORE THAN 250 WORDS
Introduction:
– Background information regarding your experiment
– Make use of your “other sources” for this section
– Clearly state hypothesis/research question and give a reason for your hypothesis
Materials/Methods:
– Someone else should be able to replicate our experiment
– Detail
– Divide into sections for different experiments
– List materials used and with any item that is unique, where it was purchased
– Write in the past tense
– Paragraph form
Results:
– This is where you make use of your primary sources
– Should include a narrative in in addition to figures/charts
– Place all data in charts/graphs; all figures should have legends
– Each experiment gets a different subsection
– Past tense
– Each section should have a question, methodology, data, and a conclusion
Discussion:
– Interpret your results
– Restate hypothesis and results
– Did results support hypothesis? Why or why not?
– Conclusion
– Relevance of your research
– Put references on separate page
