Your course grade will also be partially based on a 8-page research paper related to some aspect of death, dying or end-of-life issues. Unlike the reaction papers, it should NOT be based on your personal or subjective reaction to some end-of-life issue. Rather, you should obtain peer-reviewed scholarly articles (empirical and/or theoretical) related to a death-and-dying topic of your choosing, and you should critically review and synthesize this area of research. Although the paper can and should include some summarization of studies/articles related to your topic, it should also comment on major themes, shortcomings and directions for future research. That is, it should not be comprised exclusively of article summaries but should also include some commentary on overarching themes (e.g., limitations of the science in that area, directions for future research, etc.). The only topic that is off limits is physician assisted suicide. Papers must be submitted by 11:59pm of the day that the assignment is due.
