This course’s Final Project (worth 30% of your final grade), which will be due on May 19th, consists in a Cultural Studies research project. It is inspired by the Public Humanities, which means that you may work on a format different from an academic paper (a video, a podcast, an op-ed) that is accessible to a larger audience. Follow these steps now to elaborate your Final Project proposal:
1)
1,200-word academic research paper
2) Remember that this is a Cultural Studies project, which means that it should address the interconnectedness between culture and politics (in a broad sense), as discussed in sessions 3-4
3) Choose one specific object of analysis (a “text” or cultural phenomenon):
A movie, TV show, or videogame
A song, music video, album, or artist
A short story, poem, or book
A social movement, artivism practicesĀ Ā Ā
Political communication, propaganda
Fashion
(Anything that can be considered ācultureā or a ātextā in Cultural Studies)
4) Identify a research questionĀ
5) Establish a (preliminary) thesis for your project (i.e., your answer to the research question, the main idea that you will defend or present in your Final Project)
6) AI policy: AI allowed only for brainstorming and proofreading. Presenting long AI-generated passages or ideas as if they were your own is not allowed (as it constitutes plagiarism and academic dishonesty). The work you submit should reflect your own ideas and research. Using AI-powered academic research engines (Elicit, ConnectedPapers) is allowed, but you should only cite sources which you have actually read (AI tends to “hallucinate” quotes and sources, which renders it unreliable).

8) In your Final Project proposal, follow this structure:
FINAL PROJECT PROPOSAL
a) Cultural phenomenon or artistic work you wish to analyze, and why it is relevant
b) Sociopolitical aspect(s) with which you will connect it
c) Main thesis that you intend to argue (even if you end up changing it)
d) Your choice of format (video, podcast, op-ed, or research paper)
e) Link to one article (academic or not) that could be part of your project’s bibliography
