Hacking DNA: Implications of DNA modification and DNA testing. Background & Purp

Hacking DNA: Implications of DNA modification and DNA testing.
Background & Purpose
In Unit 8, we learned about genetic inheritance. This genetic information is passed down from parent to offspring and each parent only gives half of their genes to the offspring, which we can visualize in Punnett squares. In Unit 9, we have learned that DNA is used for gene expression, through the processes of transcription and translation. Each person has their own unique genetic code, and thus, gene expression, but did you know your DNA can be hacked? Humans have learned to hack and alter the genetic code, changing it at the molecular level. Furthermore, with the emergence of personalized DNA tests, consumers have willingly given their DNA to large companies in return for learning about their personal DNA profile. This genetic information is often stored in a database but is it safe? Can it be hacked, much like your debit card or credit card information? Let’s find out.
In your response, you will provide a brief explanation of how genes work and how they are inherited, then, you will answer the prompts after watching the videos. In part 1, these videos explain how humans can “hack” DNA to change the code. In part 2, the Video 2 choices will cover concerns related to genetic privacy and consumer DNA testing companies. You only need to watch 1 video for each part.
Watch one of the two videos below for each part:
Part 1:video choices:

or
Meet the biohacker using CRISPR to teach everyone gene editing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4vmHweDC5SY
Part 2 video choices:

or

Task
This week’s discussion involves two parts. After watching your choice of videos, be sure to fully answer the prompts for both part 1 and 2 in your post.
Part 1: In your own words, explain the role of genes and how they are inherited. Then, share your thoughts about the implications of changing human genes. How could it affect future generations and/or if you think we should be tampering with the human genome in any way? Why or why not? Feel free to also include your initial personal reaction to the video you watched.
Part 2: You receive a notice that your personal DNA was hacked. Your literal genetic identity is stolen. Explain how you would feel. What do you think should be done to prevent something like this from happening? With the rise of human genetic information freely available, how might this affect future generations? Feel free to also include your initial personal reaction to the video you watched.
In your two replies, respectfully explain if you agree or disagree with another classmate’s thoughts or concerns about DNA hacking. Why do you agree or disagree?
NOTE: In order to create discussion “threads” or a continual discussion among groups of students, be sure to add a question at the end of each post. Please remember to reply to at least 2 peers.
Grading Criteria

Your peer responses are substantive and thoughtful and advance the discussion by introducing new insights or perspectives, and/or significantly deepening or broadening the conversation with questions.
Your use of language: your writing should be clear, well-organized, and free from spelling and grammar errors.
