Guidelines:
1000 words of written text. A header and a bibliography do not count toward this total.
Double spaced. Twelve-point Times New Roman font. One-inch margins. Include an original title and page numbers.
An introduction which includes a thesis statement, a body to the essay, and a conclusion are all required. Your thesis statement, which again should be in the introduction, needs to present your main argument for the paper. Your conclusion should sum up your arguments, not introduce your thesis or new ideas (that are better for the body of the paper).
Be sure that your paper is properly organized. The sub-topics should be presented in a logical order — do not go back and forth between ideas that are not connected well.
Paragraphs are expected to be 6-8 sentences and will give a complete and coherent thought. You must have a topic sentence with each paragraph.
Limit the amount of direct quotes — many points will sound better in your own words.
All sources should only be from reputable sources (academic publications, verified historical websites, etc.). Avoid sources whose authors cannot be verified and online encyclopedias such as Wikipedia or about.com. If you need help determining the usefulness of a source consult your instructor. The MACC library, or your school’s library, will provide help with outside sources — follow the LARC link on the far left side of Canvas for MACC.
All sources must be cited within your text as well, not just quotes. Each paragraph of the body of your paper should ideally have multiple citations within it. You need regularly use all your sources, not just one. You can use any citation system that you desire. A bibliography is a must.
Avoid the use of the first person in most instances — instead of “I feel the sky is blue,” use “The sky is blue.”
