PREVIOUS PAPER INSTRUCTIONS (#557913284): MODULE #1 CASE STUDY for Selecting a Topic/Constructing an Outline/Choosing References
CASE ASSIGNMENT:
For the Capstone Project, the first step is to select a topic related to homeland security. Your selected topic will be used in all of the Capstone assignments:
For students with no concentration, you are free to choose your field of interest (e.g., homeland security, disaster management, cybersecurity, etc.).
(1) Select Homeland Security as your field of interest
After deciding on a topic, prepare a paper that accomplishes the following requirements:
1) State the Capstone topic clearly and succinctly.
2) Identify a specific geographic region that will be the focus of your Capstone paper, such as a city (IN WHICH IS ORLANDO, FL), county, or state.
[For example: if the chosen topic is FEMA’s Resilience Analysis and Planning Tool (RAPT), select a specifically identifiable city (i.e., Toledo, OH) to detail how that city’s emergency managers and community partners used RAPT to visualize and assess potential challenges to community resilience].
3) Identify what you consider to be the most interesting and relevant portions of the topic.
4) Include an outline in the paper identifying the order you will present various aspects of the topic.
5) Describe how your topic is of current interest and importance to homeland security.
NOTE 1) : This research paper should have an Introduction and a conclusion. The first paragraph should tell the reader what the research will show, “This research will show______________ .” What was your conclusion? What are best practices based on your research?
NOTE 2) : USE THE BACKGROUND READINGS & WEBSITES AS YOUR REFERENCES PAGE (IN WHICH THE BACKGROUND READINGS & WEBSITES ARE UPLOADED INTO THE ADDITIONAL MATERIALS SECTION).
NOTE 3) : Avoid unprofessional or secondary sources such as Wikipedia, Media (CNN, FOX, NPR, NYT, Newspapers, etc…)
NOTE 4) : Criterion Feedback
In your reference section, make sure you use the phrase “Retrieved from” before https links when appropriate.
ASSIGNMENT EXPECTATIONS:
Length: This Case Assignment should be 3-5 pages, not counting the cover page and references.
Assessment and Grading: Your work will be assessed based on the performance assessment rubric that is linked within the course. Review it before you begin working on the assignment.
Source Citations in the Body of the Paper: Cite sources in the body of the paper to provide supporting evidence for main points and definitive statements; to identify where you found your information; and to give credit to those whose ideas you are using.
References: At least two references should be included from academic sources (e.g., peer-reviewed journal articles).
NOTE 4) : Criterion Feedback
In your reference section, make sure you use the phrase “Retrieved from” before https links when appropriate.
Originality of Content: Quoted material should not exceed 10% of the total paper (since the focus of these assignments is critical thinking). Direct quotes are rarely necessary; students who use them when unnecessary will forfeit credit for critical thinking. For verbatim/direct quotes, enclose the quoted text in quotation marks and then cite the author, date, and location within the source (i.e., page number, paragraph number, or time stamp). For paraphrased ideas, you must give credit to the original author in an in-text citation.
Organization: Put the title of your topic on the Cover Page. Use headings and subheadings to organize your paper.
Grammar and Spelling: Assignments are expected to adhere to standard guidelines of grammar, spelling, punctuation, and sentence syntax. Points may be deducted if grammar and spelling impact clarity.
Strive to achieve the following elements of scholarly writing:
Relevance: All content is connected to the question.
Precision: Specific question is addressed; content is specific and accurate.
Depth of discussion: Present and integrate points that lead to deeper issues.
Breadth: Multiple references, multiple perspectives and factors considered.
Evidence: Points are well-supported with facts, statistics, and references.
Logic: Content makes sense and is supported by premises or factual information.
Clarity: Writing is concise and understandable.
Objectivity: Avoid use of first person and subjective bias.
