Third Poem ” Epithalamia” https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poetrymagazine/poems/58652/epithalamia
Prompt
For this essay, you are asked to develop an analytical argument (asking how and why) about the collection of poems you have chosen from the Poetry Foundation. You want to accomplish the following two objectives in your essay:
Offer an overview of the theme(s) and poems in your Poetry Foundation collection.
Offer a close reading of a few poems from that collection. In this close reading, you will identify and analyze the use of literary elements/poetic devices.
In considering those two objectives, you want to answer this question in your papers: how and why do these particular poems speak to the overall theme and focus of the Poetry Foundation collection you have chosen?
Textual Evidence (Quotations)
This is an essay of literary criticism so you are expected to include textual evidence (quotations from the poetry). You’ll need to offer some “close readings” (of at least 3 representative poems), but you’ll be making an argument about your Poetry Foundation collection as a whole.
Please note that no secondary sources are required for this essay. In fact, I encourage you to keep your focus on the poems. If you decide to use a secondary source, please make sure to provide in-text citations and to include the source in the works cited list.
Formal Requirements
This is a formal essay, so you are expected to include the following components:
Introduction
Thesis Statement
Body Paragraphs
Transition/Topic Sentences
Conclusion.
Guidelines
Length: at least 1,250 words (about 5 pages)
MLA Format: Times New Roman 12 pt. font, double spaced, 1 inch margins
In-text citations for quotations from the poems.
