Go through this list (Links to an external site.) of global cities prepared by the Global and World Cities Network at Loughborough University and familiarize yourself with the rankings criteria. Pick a city you are interested in writing your city profile on. You should plan to stick with this city when you write your final paper, unless you get permission from the professor to change it.

Many scholars disagree with the narrow terms on which the GaWC network and Kearney have ranked these cities. Investigate their criteria for ranking cities, and begin thinking about and what other aspects of your chosen city might also be relevant to thinking about how “global” it is: its history, its demographics, its position within the global economy, its levels of inequality and informality.
Write a 5-7 page report making a case for whether your chosen city does or does not deserve its ranking on the GaWC list. Profile your city by presenting evidence on the following broader criteria: its economic base and how “globalized” its economy seems to be; its demographic & cultural characteristics; levels of poverty, informality, and migration; political significance; the city’s history & projected future; and anything else you think is important in making a city “global.”
Your paper needs to make an argument. It is not merely a description of your chosen city.
Begin the report with an introductory paragraph that includes your thesis statement, such as a sentence like “In this paper I argue that…”. The paper needs a conclusion as well that reiterates your own argument in light of the evidence you have presented.
The paper should be double-spaced, in 12-point font, with one-inch margins.
You should use AT LEAST 7 HIGH QUALITY SOURCES. This must include at least 3 peer-reviewed academic journal articles as well as academic books, high-quality newspapers (eg NY Times, The Economist, The Guardian), and reputable online & print reference sources (World Bank, UNDP, etc.—NOT WIKIPEDIA). Use the databases that are discussed in the tutorial.
These sources need to be PROPERLY REFERENCED in the APA style (internal citation and a reference list—no footnotes). Remember to provide a source for every claim you make. Refer back to the tutorial for help with citing your sources.

This below was my topic proposal that you have to write the paper about
The city I have chosen is Chicago, it is ranked 10th on the Alpha list after Alpha + and Alpha ++. Cities are ranked according to how well-integrated they are into the world economy. These four “advanced producer services” are used by the GaWC to rank cities according to their connectivity through 12 categories, such as accounting, advertising, banking/finance, and law. City economics is given a higher ranking in the GaWC inventory than political or cultural factors. According to GaWC, Alpha cities are “Very important world cities that link major economic regions and states into the world economy”. The largest corporations in Chicago consist of Caterpillar, Thoughtworks, Wintrust Financial Corporation, and Northern Trust. These companies range from manufacturing, and software companies to financial planning. Chicago is ranked 11th on the Kearney Global Cities Index after Hong Kong comes in at 10. With GaWC ranking the cities based on financial contribution and Kearney ranking cities based on aspects of technological advancements and social transformations, I think it is fair to include more variables into the mix. These should include its level of inequality compared to other cities, the challenges it faced in prior years, and its social reach with the community.

I found this article by going into the TU resources and finding a scholarly search engine to produce scholarly articles. When thinking of Chicago, I wanted to dig into how this city touches the community in different ways and how this contributes to the overall success of the city which is not used as a ranking variable for GaWC or Kearney. I chose to search Chicago and Community and found an article on the non-profit Chicago Scholars and what they do. One of the main arguments in the article showcases a competition where students are allowed to present their technology innovations to venture capitalists and are being heard for there great ideas. This helps me gain a broader aspect of the “globals” of the city because it shows how the city is supporting those who are up and coming in business, technology, or any other subject. They need voices to be heard and the city using there resources to support non-profits to support students is a great way to showcase how the city is reaching out and connecting with the community.
