Genre and Audience: Write an essay intended for a diverse group of educated adul

July 3, 2024

Genre and Audience: Write an essay intended for a
diverse group of educated adults, in which you defend a precise position or
proposed solution based on convincing evidence gathered through appropriate college-level
research.
Topic Option:
·       Defend your opinion on an ongoing
debate, current event, or recent news story related to a topic interesting to
you.
Required Length, Format, and
Research:
·
Minimum of 1,000 words (1,200 words, max)
·
MLA for layout and citations (See Chapters
28-30, MLA Format Handout, and OWL
Website)
·
At least 4 research sources (articles, one of
which can be from the textbook or class links), with a minimum of 2 from the NSU Library website
·
No more than about 1/3 of the essay should be
quoted from sources
·
All research should come from credible sources,
not random websites, blogs, or videos
College Audience and Argumentation:
·
Your essay’s claim (thesis statement) should be well-defined,
timely (Kairos), and debatable.
·
An academic argument should not be an
attempt to insult the opposition; your tone should encourage dialogue.
·
Your writing should not be overly casual
or conversational. Avoid using “you;” and use “I’ only when it is necessary for
clarity (such as a personal example). Do not discuss your class, assignment, or
writing process.
·
Show why the topic matters (pathos), provide carefully
structured reasons and evidence (logos), and create a trustworthy and ethical
voice (ethos).
Essay Structure (See the handout provided or p.438-449
for sample outlines):
·
Use a quotation from an article, a real example,
or a startling fact to start off. Give a short overview of the topic and state
your position/claim/thesis in a clear and direct thesis statement.
·
Use sub-topics and appropriate paragraph breaks
to organize your essay, and don’t forget to respond to other views. The entire
essay should focus on defending the thesis statement; give evidence for any
points you make.
·
Avoid ending the essay with a lesson directed at
the reader. Find a new way to reemphasize your thesis.
How to Avoid Plagiarizing:
·
Write the essay and all your main points in your
own words.
·
Insert source material only as support for your
ideas.
·
Give clear and direct credit to all research you
use, so that we can see when, where, and which source is used.
·
Always use quotation marks when quoting, even
short phrases when they are used exactly.
·
Important: If any portion
of the essay is copied/paraphrased but not cited, this will result in a failing
grade.
Grading Rubric Criteria:
·
Appropriate Genre, Length, and Focus
·
Critical Thinking and College–Level Research
·
Audience Awareness: Academic Tone and Word
Choices
·
Effective Organization and Transitions
·
MLA Essay Format and Citations
·
Editing (Sentence Structure, Punctuation, and
Proofreading)
The topic is: I will be doing my research paper on the WBNA and how now this sport has more attention, there are more viewers and so much more support now that Catlin Clark and Angel Reese are now in the league. I believe as well as others believe this is amazing. I’d also add in the facts about how many viewers the WNBA had prior to them joining the league, and they have never made a profit since 1996… they loose on average 10 million a year.
