Genogram Assignment: complete a genogram and write a 2 page APA style summary (to include a title page, reference page, and 2 pages of written content).
Genogram: Use 8 ½ x 11 paper (you may utilize more than one sheet if required and I recommend using Microsoft Word, etc. rather than handwriting your genogram). Include 3 generations on your genogram. If unable to complete 3 generations simply discuss with the instructor. This is not meant to be intrusive and please only share what you are comfortable with.
1. Start with yourself, use the symbols as described in the Multicultural Family Institute (2017) form or another empirical resource. Include your name, age and place of birth, education level, and occupation. Draw the symbol for yourself in the center of the page.
2. Draw appropriate symbols for your parents and other partners they may have had. Record names, ages, places of residence, occupation, and dates of death if deceased. Indicate current marital status, dates of marriages, separations, and divorces.
3. Then add siblings’ names, ages, places of residence, and causes of death if deceased. Add symbols to drawing, beginning with the eldest sibling on the left. Place yourself in the appropriate birth order.
4. Add your spouse or partner if appropriate. Include your current marital status, and record the dates of marriages, separations, and divorces as appropriate. For each spouse or partner, add the name, age, and date of death if deceased. Add symbols to the drawing.
5. Draw/add your children if appropriate. Record each child’s name and age. If they live outside of the home include their place of residence and partner/spouse.
6. Follow this same format for grandparents (i.e. name, age, etc.).
7. Add any non-relatives who are important to you or your family. Place these persons on the genogram and follow same format (i.e. name, age, etc.).
8. Draw boundary lines around family members who live together.
9. Include symbols showing emotional closeness/distance between family members.
Your 2 page APA style summary should include:
1. Discuss the process of creating a personal genogram, to include your emotional response.
2. Identify any themes/patterns from your family genogram. Were there any unexpected themes/patterns?
3. Identify information/questions that you would like to know about your family as a result of this genogram exercise.
4. Discuss any form of organization you see in your family as a result of the genogram (i.e. communication styles, etc.).
5. Include a reference page for any resources cited/utilized.
