Future Vision Project
I need just third part, I have attached part 1 and part 2 because I done. and please you should follow part 1 and part 2 to do part 3
Overview of the Future Vision Project
The goal of the Future Vision Project is for you to write a paper that tells a story or describes a “what if” scenario about the future of digital privacy, based on concepts we’ve discussed in the course this semester. These kinds of fictions are often referred to as speculative fiction or speculative fabulation, design fiction, critical fabulation or are found under the broader umbrellas of science fiction or cyberpunk. We might think of the incredible impact of authors like Ursula Le Guin, Aldous Huxley, Arthur C Clarke, Phillip K Dick, William Gibson, or Octavia Butler in helping us to imagine a future of technology and privacy and acting as the basis for many technologies we interact with today. This assignment is adopted from cybersecurity expert Dr Emilee Rader. Inspiration and additional background for this assignment are found in the D2L Assignment folder under Future Vision Project.
The Future Vision project has three parts (each with their own separate dropboxes on D2L):
the “pitch” or proposal
an annotated bibliography
a final paper that includes background and framing to your fiction and a short fiction
These steps will be outlined through sessions and quizzes over the next few days, culminating in your final paper submission on the last day of class.
In this project, you will do the following:
Identify a critical digital privacy issue, technology or problem from the course that is interesting to you
Do research to find out what others are saying about the issue
Generate ideas about how this issue might play out in the future
Write a story or scenario about that possible future and provide some non-fictional context and research to explain the importance of this story
For this assignment you will write a UTOPIAN story with a moral – a future vision – that focuses on an individual or a group and a particular technology (one with a company and a device name). You will write about a particular technology owned by an institution (which can be fictional or non-fictional) and its privacy issues. Your story will have:
a setting,
a protagonist (main character),
an antagonist who introduces
a conflict/challenge, and the story must have a
resolution/ending.
See the readings in the assignment folder for some inspiration from formative fiction writers who have in reality impacted policy, driven technology design and shaped how we perceive of privacy in the US.
Your story should be warning of or a hopeful pathway forward to something. Go back into our slides and readings and see how narratives play out in real life: your story could be from the perspective of a hacker who has been caught in court, a lover who receives a Valentine from a drone, an environmental activist who is worried about grid burnout from the environmental impacts of streaming services, a journalist who has gained access to a person of international interest….
We might think of the ways in which Phillip K. Dick’s Minority Report (Kubrick’s film version was the first summer blockbuster after 9/11! Was informed by Jaron Lanier and ) or Do Androids Dream Electric Sheep? (turned into Bladerunner) have been cited as precursors for predictive policing and touch screen technology, or how the assistant aesthetic (Google Home, Siri, Cortana) came from Arthur C Clarke and Stanley Kubrick’s 2001, William Gibson’s coining of the word “cyberspace” in the canonical cyberpunk novel Neuromancer which went on to shape the vernacular and style of early internet and computing culture, Star Trek’s communicators as influential to the current day cell phone and smart watch… there exist countless examples documented by journalists, scholars and technologists that demonstrate the tight knit relationship between fiction and non-fiction when it comes to cybersecurity, privacy and modern day technologies. We will use this exercise to think through some of this connection and envision a better future through this long held tradition in computing.
You may use this opportunity to develop a utopia. Be sure it is clear who designed the technology (a multinational corporation, US government, Silicon Valley startup, US-based hacker) and who your envisioned stakeholders are (“all of the population” is not acceptable). You will tell the story of only one individual or group from one geography or subculture, not of all of society). Your fiction should always have a setting (time, place), a main character (a specific person or group), a conflict brought on by an antagonist, and a resolution/ending. Be sure that your narrative has a very clear purpose, a lesson of something that it is warning against or explaining the possibility for.
****
If your narrative amounts to a dystopic fiction whose thesis is too abstract or too superficial (e.g. “a society with no privacy is terrible!” or “bad powerful people are really scary and bad!”, for example) you will not fulfill the objectives of this assignment.
*****
I suggest taming your story to something VERY specific! Your fiction should be rooted in a specific technology, a specific court case, a public controversy, a particular ethical dilemma or cultural phenomena. Your job is to drop me as the reader into a scene that tells me why privacy matters.
NOTE: this is an assignment that is asking you to use fiction to flex your understanding of the course contents demonstrating to me your understanding of specific technologies and policies through a case you have created. I am not interested in reading your amateur science fiction about aliens or fantasy that has light or no relevance to this course (though you may send this at another time if you are creating it!!) – there are specific instructions here to follow. For this assignment, for full credit, I am evaluating your critical thinking and research about the future of cybersecurity and privacy.
