Jackdaws are easy to construct: anything that is related in some fairly direct way to a piece of literature and that can aid a student’s comprehension or interest in a book is eligible, including photographs, recordings, movies, period songs or music, news articles, timelines and maps, biographical sketches of authors, and lists of related books. Choose a quality piece of children’s historical fiction. Good Reads. provides a list of 650 Historical Fiction books for children. This may be a good place for you to begin your thinking. It is not necessary for you to choose from these texts, however it is a great place to begin.
Determine an appropriate grade level/range for your jackdaw. (What grade level will be the focus of your Jackdaw?)
Identify NCSS Theme(s) and NGSSS Standards
Collect a minimum of 10 artifacts that illustrate the historical era. You must include a description (written or verbal) of how each artifact is connected to the topic and how it will be used.
Choose several other pieces of children’s literature, of various genres, that depict the historical era. You must include an annotation/description of these pieces.
Develop a BRIEF (5-7 minute) presentation that includes the above information. Since this is a web-based course you will create a powerpoint, Prezi, vodcast, etc. Eventually, you will make the file available to your peers therefore, a powerpoint with missing information is unacceptable. The project should facilitate learners understanding of the chosen historical era.
