For this third project, review the Global Risks Report for 2023, published by the World Economic Forum. In addition, here is more information presented in different formats that you may find interesting and helpful.
After reading through the report and reviewing the additional information from the WEF Web site, go to Appendix A on page 74. There you will see a condensed grouping of global risks condensed into five main areas:
Economic
Environmental
Geopolitical
Societal, and
Technological
A “global risk” is the possibility of the occurrence of an event or condition that, if it occurs, could cause significant negative impact for several countries or industries. This includes global GDP, population, or natural resources.
Select one of the five main areas in Appendix A that is of interest to you and within it, select a specific problem that you care about or is important to you.
For example, you could look at:
Increasing gas prices due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine or rising prices and current inflation (economic);
Extreme weather-related disasters or species extinction (environmental);
Recent global sanctions levied against Russia or immigration issues (geopolitical);
Mental health crisis brought on by the Covid pandemic or recent political polarization (societal); or
Lack of cryptocurrency oversight or cyber threats (technological).
Note*: These are only examples developed for illustration in mid-March 2022. When you start your project, these may have changed … for better or worse.
Set-up your report according to the following main headings:
I. Introduction of Global Risk
Introduce your global risk, e.g. economic, environmental, geopolitical, societal, or technological and explain why you selected the global risk that you did.
II. Overview of Global Risk Category
Describe the various problems and areas of concern that your selected global risk covers. Do additional research and find out more about some of the problem areas within this global risk category.
III. Your Specific Problem of Concern
State the specific problem that you seek to solve. Find and cite a research-based statistic that shows the size of the problem. Show the trend of the problem and if applicable, a comparison to other countries. Discuss what you learned about the possible causes and consequences of a specific problem within the category you selected.
IV. Social Impact Organization(s)
What social impact organization(s) would be best to solve this problem? Provide a description of relevant organization(s) and an overview of the mission, goals, and values of each.
Your final report should be 2-3 pages with at least three credible, research-based sources integrated throughout your paper. Upload your final report here. See the Rubric for evaluation criteria.
