For this lesson, you’ll create an infographic to synthesize a course topic and one external source of your choosing. Specifically, you will create an infographic that illustrates the characteristics, similarities, and differences between the three major deals described in the Lesson and lesson readings. The intent is to show how these three deals impacted the oil industry in their own unique ways.
What Is An Infographic?
An infographic is a method for communicating ideas, concepts, data, and more. Creating an infographic will help you engage with the lesson material and will give you practice in synthesizing information and communicating it in a concise format. You’ll be thinking critically about how energy is used in our world today! Please review the following video to learn more about the qualities commonly included in infographics.
Types of Infographics
Creating an effective infographic is a bit more complicated than simply putting facts and images together. The information must also be efficiently organized and effective in demonstrating the connections between important concepts or ideas. There are many ways in which you can organize content — consider a list or process format that shows a series of steps, or a map format to show location-based data. You can also use charts and graphs, images, or a timeline. Be sure to check out the example infographic on the next page!
Technologies for creating infographics:
A number of software applications can help you quickly and easily create an infographic. Many of them also have free tutorials available on YouTube. You can start by looking at the applications listed below.

offers free accounts to help you quickly and easily create infographics, and it offers predesigned templates that can quickly be customized with additional text, graphics, and more. It has a simple and easy-to-use interface, and each item you create is downloadable to a PDF format. *Please note: Canva offers graphics and other elements for an additional fee. You are not expected to purchase anything in order to create your infographics. Doing so is at your own discretion.
Getting Started
Remember, your job here is to make connections between the course readings and an external source of information and to communicate that connection/those connections.
Review the grading rubric for this assignment.
Review the assigned course readings. Make note of key points. You might also make some sketches as you think about the material. Is there something in the assigned readings you want to learn more about? Are you interested to see how things may have changed over the years — or in your lifetime, for example?
Once you’ve landed on a topic that interests you, conduct some independent research to find a related article. Your infographic must reference at least one external source. Wikipedia does not count!
Review your notes and research and find the ideas that are most interesting or thought-provoking to share. Hone your list to about 10 key points. Remember that a connection between the course material and the external article must be included in your submission!
Use a template in Adobe Spark or Canva to create your infographic.
This creative assignment is designed to be a personalized reflection of your learning, so get creative! Remember that, as always, academic integrity rules apply. Cite your sources (APA format, please) — this goes for articles, quotations, and any visuals you don’t create yourself. See the grading rubric for specifics.
