In your essay, you will be discussing Renaissance Humanism as it is reflected in three works: the painting by Botticelli which you will view by virtually visiting the Norton Simon Musuem, a work of architecture from your text that we have studied this semester, and a sculptural work from your text that we have studied this semester.
Apply all that you have learned about analyzing a work of visual art, carefully noting all elements of each work, such as medium, dimensions, line, color, shape, light, function, composition, treatment of the human body, style, brushstroke, etc.
Essay Prompt: In an essay of four to five paragraphs, discuss the concept of Renaissance Humanism, and how it is manifested in each of these works: the painting by Botticelli, the work of architecture, and the sculpture you have chosen from your text.
Follow the conventions of correct academic writing (Introduction with a thesis statement, body paragraphs to support and develop the thesis, and a conclusion). Highlight or underline your thesis statement. The most successful essay responses will be focused, direct, straightforward, and supported by concrete, specific details and examples.
In your essay, please define Renaissance Humanism. Then, discuss how Renaissance Humanism is manifested in these three works. Be sure to identify the titles and artists of the works you reference.
You may refer to other works that we have studied this semester, and you may also refer to your text. However, no other outside sources are permitted.
Criteria for Evaluation:
An engaging introduction which includes the thesis statement;
A strong thesis statement which meets all criteria for a successful thesis
Body paragraphs that begin with topic sentences that directly reflect an aspect of the thesis;
Concrete and specific details and examples in body paragraphs to show how and why the topic sentence is true;
Correct sentence structure;
Correct usage;
A conclusion that begins with a restatement of the thesis statement, and which brings the essay to a graceful close.
