For this assignment, you will watch a video of an ELA teacher working with ESOL students and take notes (one option is using Ethnographic Eyes’ Note taking and Note making protocol) on the teacher’s instructional strategies for communicating with and assisting ESOL students/ELLs. Then, you will write a reflection where you summarize what you observed and suggest ideas for applying what you learned to your own teaching contexts.

Watch a video of an ELA teacher working with and talking about their work with ESOL students. Choose one of the videos below OR find one of your own:

As you watch the video, take notes. Using THIS TEMPLATE, (I UPLOAD THE TEMPLATE IN FILES) on the lefthand side of the chart, write notes about what you are observing the teacher and students doing and saying. Then, in the right hand side of the chart, write down your reflections and ideas about what you’ve observed. This will help you write the reflection portion of this assignment.
Task #2: Reflection
After your observation, you will then write a one to two page (double-spaced) reflection. The reflection should focus on two main areas:
Summarize what you observed. In your summary, be sure to connect what you saw to each of the following:
class readings and modules about teaching English Language Arts
class discussions/notes
your previous ESOL/ELL/TSL classes
your own experiences working with ESOL students
2. Apply what you observed to your own teaching context. How would you adapt or adopt (or not) what the teacher implemented with his/her students?
