Purpose: This course builds a lens through which you can view your own communicative acts as well as the communicative acts of others, This assignment is intended for you to show your ability to apply communication concepts to examples you provide, and this is an exercise in applying concepts from interpersonal relationships (Chapter 9) and the intercultural communication (Chapter 8) to explain and understand communicative behaviors.
Grading: You will be graded on the appropriateness and application of concepts that you choose and your ability to explain how that concept illustrates either communicative behaviors or motivations for behaviors. You will also be graded on spelling, sentence structure, and grammar (pay attention to character names, complete sentences, plurals, possessives, tense, and capitalization).
Application Assignment:
You can choose only concepts related to Chapter 9: Communication in Close Relationships and Chapter 8: Communicating Across Cultures. This assignment will be a minimum of 200 words for your application to a popular culture example and an application to your own life experience, so a minimum of 400 words total.
Part 1 – Popular Culture Application (200 words minimum)- Based on what you have learned so far about communication studies, you will choose concepts from Chapter 8 and Chapter 9 and then apply them to an example from popular culture. (Examples – Social Penetration Theory applied to Jim and Pam from The Office, border dwellers and culture shock applied to Emily from Emily in Paris, aversive communication behaviors in relationships for Joe in the Netflix series You). In 200 words explain the connection between the concept and the example.
Part 2 – Life Experience Application (200 words minimum) – The same way that you chose and applied concepts in Part 1, do the same with different concepts but with yourself as the example. Based on the amount of stories Steve has told in class to illustrate concepts from his own life, these concepts help us understand ourselves and the world around us.
