For the Semester Project students will write an APA Style
paper to be uploaded in Blackboard (see
the course schedule for due dates). Students will build upon their project
by completing first the Topic Selection Essay, the Reference Page, and then the
Final APA Paper. The project will be graded on content, organization and flow,
grammar, mechanics, and adherence to APA guidelines. Students must cite a
minimum of three (3) sources (in
addition to your textbook). The course textbook is
required and must be used as a source. At least two (2) of those sources
must be peer-reviewed journal articles (i.e. they cannot be websites such as
Wikipedia, Web MD, or Mayo Clinic). Originality
in your final paper is important, please do NOT exceed more than five credible
sources. Students should use Galileo
and Library Resources. The paper should include
in-text citations (APA style) and have a title, abstract, and reference page.
The paper should have a minimum of 5 pages (this includes
the title, abstract page and reference page). The well-written paper should
describe/explain concepts pertaining to one of the Psychological Topics covered
in this course (see the list of topics in this folder and choose a topic for
your project). A drop box will be provided in Blackboard for the student to
upload the Topic Selection Essay, Reference Page, and the Final APA Paper. No assignments will be accepted via email.
Please plan ahead.
All
assignments must be a Microsoft Word Document only and be typed in an
appropriate format (12 point, Times New Roman, left justification, double
spaced, and indented paragraphs). All writing assignments should be
proofread for spelling and grammar mistakes.

Paper should include an abstract page; here are the instructions; On the first line of the page, center the word “Abstract”
(but do not include quotation marks) and the word should be in bold. On the
following line, write a summary of the key points of your research. Your
abstract summary is a way to introduce readers to your research topic, the
questions that will be answered, the process you took, and any findings or
conclusions you drew. This summary should not be indented, but should be
double-spaced and between 150-250 words. (Do not exceed 250 words) If applicable,
help researchers find your work in databases by listing keywords from your
paper after your summary.
To do this, indent and type Keywords: Then list your keywords in lowercase that
stand out in your research.
The rest of the paper should include; APA Writing Template [Title of Your
Paper – Do not include brackets]
Use this template to write your
semester paper. Be sure to keep the double spacing throughout your text. Begin
with the introduction. Indent. The introduction presents the problem and
premise upon which the research was based. It goes into more detail about this problem
than the abstract. The topic/thesis statement should be in
the introduction paragraph. Formulate
a single-sentence topic/thesis statement to guide your course project. ***NOTE:
DO NOT include the Topic Selection
Essay in the final APA paper, points will be deducted. ***
Method
Begin a new section with the
Research Method. In psychology, there
are several research methods used to conduct research. Please
review Chapter 2 Psychological Research section 2.2 Approaches to Research in
the course textbook. The Method section shows how the study was run and
conducted. Be sure to describe the methods through which data was collected.
Your
paper topic needs to cover TWO entire pages. Short papers will
have points deducted. Be sure to include a reference page AND include in-text citations, so that I will know where you found
your information. That means you must have three (3) references in addition to
your textbook (total of 4 references). The course textbook is required and must
be used as a source. At least two (2) of those sources must be peer-reviewed
journal articles.
Results
Begin a new section with the
Results. Results section summarizes the data from the conducted research. Although I want you to research and find
information on your topic, originality needs to be in these papers. Do NOT copy
and paste, either from written materials or from the Internet. Be careful not
to plagiarize. Remember to use quotes for any material that you use from other
sources if the wording is exact. If it is someone else’s work, but you reword
it, you still need to cite them. For example, a direct quote would be:
Feldman (2005) states that “Given the lack of evidence that subliminal
perception can meaningfully affect our behavior.” On the other hand, if you
just reword someone’s ideas, use this: Extrasensory perception or ESP is
commonly associated with phenomena that does not involve known senses and is
frequently met with skepticism by psychologists (Feldman 2005). Plagiarism is a
cheating offense that is addressed in the course syllabus and the Student
Handbook….” Plagiarism is defined as ‘the appropriation of any other person’s
work and the unacknowledged incorporation of the work in one’s own work for
offered credit.” Please refer to the course syllabus on Academic Dishonesty.
Conclusion
The last section is the conclusion,
a summary of the research paper. Finally, be sure to submit your work in a
Microsoft Word document only. Do not use Google Doc or any other format. If you do, Blackboard will not open it and it will result
in a “0” grade for the assignment. Remember, in order to
progress in your career, writing is a required skill, and those who have this
skill will definitely have an advantage in the workplace.
Again, your paper must be TWO
COMPLETE pages! Also, use Times New Roman 12-point font, not large print so that it takes up
space! All
writing assignments should be proofread for spelling and grammar mistakes. Proofread carefully! Although this
is not an English class, your paper grade will suffer if there are numerous
typos, run-on sentences, and other grammatical errors.
Take your time; don’t wait until the
last minute to pick a topic and do the research. This will give you time to
think about your topic and include your own opinion. Just be certain that I can
tell from reading your paper which parts are from your references and which are
you own original thoughts. I will assume that anything that is not referenced
is your opinion.
