Case study: Ethical and Legal issues #1
Sally hired Steve 11 months ago on the surgical unit. His references at his previous place of                    employment were glowing, Sally notices that he works well with staff members, and his patients         seem to be highly satisfied with the nursing care they receive from him. Brianne, one of the staff        nurses, reports to Sally that Steve seems to be overly friendly with female patients. Sally asks Brianne to explain what she means. Brianne whispers to Sally, “I overheard Steve ask several female patients  for their phone numbers, and he is spending extra time with female patients. Today, he asked me to  switch patients with him, so he would have more female patients.” Sally has not received any patient complaints about Steve. As the nurse leader, Sally decides to wait until someone actually witnesses  an event; after all, Steve is a competent practicing nurse.

Gender, cultural, and generational differences add to the challenges of interpersonal                             communication, especially when mixed in a stressful healthcare environment. Many times the           conflict progresses and may involve some level of bullying. You recently graduated from an                RN-to-DNP program, you belong to the millennial generation (also called Generation Y), and you       were just promoted to Director of Critical Care Services. It feels like you have been in school forever, but you still managed to work 20-30 hours/week as a charge nurse on a busy cardiovascular (CV)    step-down unit throughout school.
1. The Nurse Manager from your CV ICU, who is a female and belongs to the Baby Boomer generation, has informed you she is closing four beds for the night shift due to inadequate staffing levels. When you object to her plan, she states, “You don’t know what you are talking about; this is what is done when you don’t have enough staff.”

As a nurse leader, you recognize that everyone at all levels of the health care organization is being    asked to do more and accept more responsibility. A poor outcome has occurred for a patient, Mrs. Earle, who was admitted for a routine                      cholecystectomy. An investigation is conducted to find out what happened and how the poor       outcome could have been prevented. Maria Blanco, the RN who was on shift that day, must think back to her prioritization and organization of patient care.
The scene begins in the nurse manager’s office with nurse manager, Roxanne Jamison, prompting Maria, the staff nurse who was working that day, to recall her organization and prioritization of   patient care.
