For Part One, you will choose five of the following terms and, for each, will briefly identify and explain (a) who or what it is, (b) the relevant time period, (c) a relevant location, and (d) the historical significance. Each should be at least two sentences long, but no more than two paragraphs.
I expect that these will be written in your own words. You may use and reference the textbook, but you will not earn credit if you copy directly from the textbook. You can use outside sources, but I want you to write it out in your own words and explain to me what these things are and why they matter. Keep the plagiarism information in mind and be sure that you’re citing your work. Each of the five identifications is worth 5 points, for a total of 25 points.

Section 2: Essay (75 points)
For Part Two of the Midterm Exam, you will choose one of the following prompts:
1. Enlightenment ideas had a significant impact in the late eighteenth century, playing a role in the revolutions in America, France, and Haiti.
Which thinkers do you think were most influential?
What impact did ideas like natural rights and the social contract have on the way people began to think about their relationship with the government?
In what ways did the American Revolution influence the French Revolution?
What impact did both the American and French Revolutions have on the Haitian Revolution?
2. Throughout history, trade networks have served as integral connections between regions. One of the most significant of those was established after the arrival of Europeans to the Americas, often called the triangular trade – but when the trade in enslaved people increased in response to European demand, it led to the creation of the Transatlantic Slave Trade.
How and why did the Transatlantic Slave Trade begin?
Why did Europeans wish to purchase enslaved Africans rather than continue to exploit the labor of Native Americans?
How were slaves acquired in Africa and what was the impact of the increasing trade in / demand for enslaved people?
What role did the slave trade have in the rise and fall of West African states?
For the Essay, I am most concerned with your ideas and seeing what you’ve learned! You need to cite the info you use – you can use both your textbook and online sources, but be sure that you cite your work. Students whose essay is a patchwork of phrases/sentences taken from the textbook or online sources will not earn credit for this assignment.
Your essay should be at least 700 words in length.
