Conquest and Early
Colonial Period (min. 700 words)
Describe the events leading to and
immediately after the conquest of one of the pre-Hispanic Indigenous Cultures
we have examined in this course. In your description include information about
the places involved in the campaign, who were the main historical figures (main
leaders of both Spaniards and indigenous group), a general timeline of the
events leading to confrontation, what strategies or tricks were employed by the
Spaniards, what other factors allowed conquistadors to defeat the native groups
under question, what was the human cost of colonization, what main Spanish
settlements were created in the aftermath of war, and lastly what fate awaited
the main conquistador leaders of these campaigns.
In your description include an analyze on the
Complete Conquest myth. In what way was Spanish control of the Americas no only
limited militarily, territorially, culturally but also under permanent internal
and external attacks?
B. Middle Colonial Period (min 800 words)
Use the following images (see below) to
describe and analyze the middle period of Spanish Colonial Latin America in
terms of the its subordination to mercantile and royal interest of the colonial
metropolis, the navigational strategies used by the Spaniards to defend against
pirates and privateers, the types of enterprises that populated the economic
geography of the new world, the areas that became marginal to the metropolitan
interest, the labor system employed to produce and/or extract wealth from Latin
America, and the racial/caste and class structure that came to characterize
Spanish Colonial Latin America.
In your analyze include a discussion on the
struggles associated with the encomiendas system and it substitution by the Pueblo
de Indios and the repartimiento system. Lastly explain the reasoning behind
Galeanos’ phrase “Spain owned the Cow but others Drank the Milk.”
