Final Paper Prompt
Global Economic Crisis
GBST 104
Prof. John W. Cioffi
Write a 7 to 8-page paper (not including references/bibliography) in response to the following
prompt:
As we have seen repeatedly, severe global economic crises involve the emergence of political
and economic conditions that result in crisis, and crises produce political and economic reactions
and responses that change the political economy at the national and/or international level. How
did politics and economics interact in the case of the Global Financial Crisis, and the Great
Recession and Eurozone Crisis that followed directly from it? Discuss the roles of politics and
policy as both cause and effect of the crisis. Be careful to distinguish between the immediate and
longer-term political and policy consequences of crises. Also, be attentive to the limits of
political and economic responses to crisis (i.e., what did not change significantly). You should
use historical evidence and analysis from earlier crises in framing and supporting your analysis
and argument. You may also discuss policy responses and political economic consequences to
the Covid crisis as potential evidence of longer-term effects of the Global Financial Crisis.
Keep in mind that I am not asking you for your opinions. You need to construct an analysis and
argument based on logic and evidence from the readings. Build on your work and understanding
of the theories we have covered in this class. This is not intended to be a research paper. You are
expected to show your understanding of the assigned readings by using them were appropriate to
support your analysis and argument. You must also cite to all sources on which you rely. I do not
care about the specific citation format, so long as the source is clearly identifiable and the cites
contain the page number(s) of the specific reference (where applicable).
Do not go over the page limit. Think carefully about the prompt and answer it as completely as
you can by focusing on the most important information at your disposal. Make sure your essays
are well organized and that the writing is polished (and spell/grammar checked!).
Papers are due by 11:00 pm on Thursday, June 13th, 2024. They should be formatted in 12-point
font, double-spaced, with 1-inch margins. Turn in your paper through the Turn-it-in link on
Canvas and as a Word document via email to ********************
Please feel free to contact me with any questions, ideas, and/or concerns. We can correspond by
