Final Paper Instructions
Your final paper (5-7 pages) will involve answering three specific questions related to James
Davison Hunter’s book To Change the World. The questions are provided below.
Although you are answering a set of questions, your paper should still be written as a traditional
paper. You will want to include an opening paragraph (in which you discuss Hunter’s thesis and
the outline of your paper), the body of your paper (in which you explicate your main points), and
a concluding paragraph (in which you summarize your preceding material). You can use
headings or subheadings in the body of your paper to distinguish when you are addressing
particular questions if you wish.
You are required to cite specifically from the book in your answers; feel free to bring in outside
sources—including other sources used in this course—to help support your answers.
Questions:
1. Why does Hunter feel that the three typical ways that Christians have engaged in culture
(conservative, liberal, and Ana-Baptist) have all failed to make substantial changes in our
culture? What are the problems with each way?
2. What do you think of Hunter’s suggestion about “faithful presence”? What is it, and what
What might it look like? Do you think his suggestion is a “cop-out,” realistic, or a measure of
both?
3. According to the mission and vision statements of William Jessup University, the school
seeks to educate “transformational leaders” who will “help redeem world culture.” For this reason, many often refer to William Jessup University as producing “world changers.” What does that mean and how might Hunter’s book serve as both an encouragement and a correction to what we say we are doing? Be specific—use some quotes from the book.

Your paper should use proper APA formatting, including cover page, in-text citations, and
reference list (no abstract required).
