Competency Statement: This course is an introduction to various leadership theories, styles, and principles with a focus on the application of these concepts in personal and professional environments. Students will learn how to define their personal leadership style and begin a journey of exploring continued leadership development techniques. The course will examine the characteristics of an effective leader, including qualities, skills, and strategies. Students will learn to think critically about leadership and how to apply the best style in different situations. Emphasis will be placed on self-awareness and emotional intelligence.

Gain an understanding of one’s own leadership style and philosophy, strengths and weaknesses, and steps to make personal improvements
Purpose of the Assessment
The final assessment for this competency is to create a personal leadership philosophy based on research. You must include leadership theories, styles, traits, emotional intelligence, and habits. You will submit a paper in which you describe your own personal philosophy about leadership for the kind of leader you want to become. In this assignment, you will try to answer the question, “What kind of leader do I want to become?” The purpose of this assessment is to demonstrate a competent knowledge of the study of leadership and how it applies to organizational and personal development.
Submission Artifacts:
Your paper should consist of the following six sections:
An introduction that includes general information about leadership and its history, including a definition. Also include a general description of your personal leadership philosophy and a description about the following sections you are going to develop.
An overview of the various leadership theories and styles that have been developed over the last one hundred years. Also include the leadership theories that you most relate to and plan on applying to your leadership.
An overview of the different leadership traits that have been identified through research. Also include milestone activity results and how they affect the leader you want to become in the future.
An overview of emotional intelligence and why it’s an imperative skill for all leaders to possess. Also include your milestone activity results and how that might affect your leadership.
An overview of any mindsets, skills, and habits a leader must possess to be effective. Also include your milestone activity results and what habits or mindsets accelerate the most growth for you.
A conclusion that summarizes your personal leadership philosophy and how you plan on using leading theories, concepts, and styles to be an effective leader.
Submission: Final
You will have a chance to submit a rough draft (which will not be graded). If you choose to submit a draft you will receive feedback from your instructor. This feedback will help you with your content, grammar, citations, and formatting. After receiving the feedback, make any necessary revisions to your paper.
When you are ready, submit your final draft. The final draft of your paper is the only grade you will receive for this competency. Your grade will be based on a rubric listed below. It is important to follow the directions for the paper and make any changes necessary that are suggested by your instructor.

Your paper should be five to six pages (not including title or reference pages)
Be typed and double-spaced, using 12-point font, with 1 in. margins on all sides.
Follow APA format.
Include your name and page numbers in the header/footer.
Reference a minimum of three scholarly journals or articles 
Cite sources, parenthetically and in the reference page. Citations must follow APA format.
