The purpose of the paper is to gain more knowledge and understanding of theory and techniques, including assessment, applicable counseling theories, and interventions specific to the chosen topic that can be used in your current/future work counseling individuals impacted by addictions.

The paper is a minimum of six pages, not including title pages, reference pages, or the addendum describing the diagnosis. An abstract is not required for this assignment. The paper should follow the most recent APA format (e.g., typed, double-spaced, with 1-inch margins and 12-point Times New Roman type) and be documented by at least five relevant peer-reviewed scholarly journal articles dated 2014 or newer from professional journals (e.g., counseling, counseling psychology, psychology…). Up to two books dated from 2012 or newer (one of these books can be a course textbook) can be substituted for two articles. Important NOTE: Please attach an addendum page to your 6-8 page paper presenting the DSM diagnosis of your chosen topic, as the full description can take up 1-2 pages.

Paper Title: “Addiction Alcohol Use Disorder Counseling and Treatment.”

A. Opening Paragraph (6 pts.)

Introduce the selected addiction topic.
Statement as to why you chose the disorder.
Write a sentence or two describing what you will cover in the paper.
B. Overview of Addiction Topic Selected (e.g., Gambling Disorder, Stimulant Use Disorder) (20 pts.)

Description of the Addiction (NOTE: please attach and refer to an appendix page that describes the lengthy DSM diagnosis of your chosen topic to avoid the entire description taking up 1 to 2 pages of the paper).

Research related to:
Stats (e.g., prevalence, gender, age factor, pre-genetic factors, race, social status)
Any historical issues (if applicable)
Significance of addiction (e.g., family, work, economics)
Include any life span developmental (if applicable)
C. Consequences of Addiction Topic Selected (name, e.g., Alcohol Use Disorder) (20 pts.)

Impact on the brain and body (e.g., liver, heart).
Pharmacology implications and the subjective side effects, including long-term consequences.
D. Counseling and Treatment Approaches of Addiction Topic Selected (40 pts.)

Choose at least one of the following by describing the theory and include counseling/treatment approaches; then apply it to your topic (if you have a different theory/treatment approach in mind, just let your instructor know ahead of time for approval).

Present your thoughts on the impact of accessibility of services and resources for clients in the healing and recovery of persons with addictions and how/when you might bring it into counseling practice.

F. Present a fictitious case study (person with addiction discussed and completed the following (36 pts.)

** Be sure to include an assessment of the client and your preferred treatment (counseling techniques) for the issue.
