Each group member will contribute a minimum of 600 words (+/-10%). Your writing will explore topics of interest within your thematic choice and focus on a target audience – your audience may be niche and focused on a specific subculture, or you may seek to explore your thematic topic with a general audience in mind. There is scope to get creative in your response to this brief, and you may choose to create poetry, write a story, conduct an interview, research a subculture in depth, author an opinion piece, write autobiographically, or explore another form of creative expression. In addition to your written submission, each group member will contribute a minimum of one original visual piece which could take many forms: photography, collage/bricolage, illustration, painting – any form of visual creative expression.
Within the zine you may include a variety of work that either draws on research and developments within your theme or develops an original viewpoint. As a group you should make editorial decisions together with regard to audience, and the balance between research based/informative articles, creative responses and opinion pieces. You will need to consider the relationship between audience and content to ensure the zine is relevant to your readers. If you focus on a specific subculture, you can assume your audience has some thematic knowledge, if you choose a general audience, your zine will play a role in informing them about your chosen theme.
You will explore the relationship between visual representations and written communication that typifies your chosen subject, considering factors including: logo design, typography, colour scheme, visual aesthetic, images and text. Your zine will be produced using Photoshop and Indesign.
