What makes an artist an artist? What makes art, well art? Art is a beautiful painting in an expensive gallery, or perhaps it’s an emotional connection that pulls you deep into its own depth. However, would you consider a comedian to be an artist? John Leguizamo, a man who is an actor, comedian, director, play writer and artist, uses his platform to educate anyone and everyone who’s willing to learn and listen through his artistry. Being a Latino man growing up in New York, Leguizamo took on the challenge. Using his traumatic childhood and shedding light into the true Latino community issues, He opened the window into the Latino struggles and insecurities at a time when we were still invisible.
John Leguizamo was born in Bogota, Columbia on July 22nd in 1964. At the age of 3, him and his family would immigrate to New York. They then would settle in Jackson heights queens. Leguizamo’s home life was very unstable, constant arguing and working between both parents left no room for john, and at the age of 14 Leguizamo’s parents would eventually divorce (A&E Television Network).
