Explain why you see your choice as a major theme of world history since 1400.

June 18, 2021
Christopher R. Teeple

The annotated bibliography asks you to reflect on course content and discuss what you see as a major theme of world history since 1400, while demonstrating a command of historical thinking skills.
We can look at world history in a number of different ways, but for the purposes of this assignment, choose one of these topics:
Economic consequences of global connections
Environmental consequences of global connections
Equality, inequality, and global connections
Global politics
1) In one paragraph (155-165 words), explain why you see your choice as a major theme of world history since 1400. Your opening sentence will be “___ is a major theme of world history since 1400 because ___.” Then, explain why you believe that, based on your understanding of what we have read and talked about in this course. The sample for this assignment provides further details on this section.
2) Using Chicago Manual of Style format for bibliographic entries, provide bibliographic information on three primary sources that we have studied in the course, with a brief description (one full paragraph) for each source that states what the source is (“This newspaper article describes…”) and how or why it relates to the theme that you have chosen. Each source must come from a different week of the course. List each primary source in chronological order–the order in which they were first written or published–as shown in the sample. This goes against Chicago Manual of Style recommendations, but it makes sense in terms of demonstrating and illustrating historical thinking.
The format for citing our primary sources is:
Footnote (only use footnotes if you are directly quoting or paraphrasing a specific passage from the source, and format with a first line indent, as shown in the sample):
Surname of original author, “Title of Primary Document, Year of Publication,” relevant page number(s).
Bibliographic entry (format with a hanging indent, as shown in the sample):
Surname of original author, First name. “Title of Primary Document, Year of Publication.” In Worlds Together, Worlds Apart: A Companion Reader, ed. Elizabeth Pollard and Clifford Rosenberg, page numbers of entire document. New York: W. W. Norton, 2019.
3) Then, using the JSTOR database for History, provide bibliographic information for three secondary sources relating to the theme, with a brief description (one full paragraph) of the source that states whether it is a book or journal article and explains how or why it relates to the theme that you have chosen. Each source must come from a different week of the course. List each secondary source in alphabetical order by author’s last name, as shown in the sample.
In our April 27 class meeting, I will review using the JSTOR database.
Click here for a sample, which presents the format for the assignment. Please follow the format provided in the sample: do not include your name or any other identifying information, use 12 point Times New Roman as your font, use one inch margins, and while citations are single-spaced, your introductory section and annotations should be double-spaced. Resources on the use and citation of sources may be found here.
Just in case it needs to be stated, do not use any of the examples provided in the sample in your own work. Any assignment that does so will earn a grade of zero.
The annotated bibliography will be submitted here as a Microsoft Word document or a PDF; it will be graded out of 100 points, and is due by 11:59pm Friday, May 9. The assignment closes Monday, May 10 at 11:59pm.
