Did you ever think that a show called America’s Got Talent actually might have originated outside the U.S.A.? Were you aware that there are currently 22 international editions of Vogue magazine, including Vogue Arabia, Vogue India, and Vogue Poland?
Did you know that Hollywood has two big rivals in movie making, Bollywood and Nollywood?
These examples are all in different ways manifestations of the relationship between the forces called globalization and localization, as discussed by Havens and Lotz in Chapter 10.
For this assignment, first
1) Explain what globalization is in the media industries. Havens and Lotz give this phenomenon the term, “media globalization.”
You MUST use two of the key words or terms used in the chapter, such as “geocultural markets,” “economies of scale,” etc.
Analysis
2) Find an example of how localization is needed to make globalization work. You may select from any media industry, as Havens and Lotz provide subsections on film, television, gaming, music, magazines, newspapers, even advertising. Select a medium, and then find an interesting example within it on which to write. Tell us how these frenemies keep their relationship going despite the demands and barriers presented by regulation, culture, economics, and/or technology.
