This week, through your assigned textbook reading and the videos linked in this week’s announcement, you were introduced to binocular vision and depth perception. Please consider what you learned this week, as you answer the questions below. Remember, you have to answer each question
(1) Binocular Vision -the ability to maintain visual focus on an object with both eyes, creating a single visual image. Complete the following experiment:
Hold a pencil or pen in each hand at arms length in front of your face. Touch the tips (e.g., erasers of pencils) together while closing one eye. (pencils can be held horizontally—end to end, or vertically—one above the other.) Next open both eyes and repeat the activity.
Explain the differences you see with one eye opposed to two eyes.
Base on your experience with this activity, do you think a person judge distance more accurately when looking with one eye or with two? Explain your answer.
(2) 3D Vision – Routine eye exams are recommended once a year to make sure your eyes are healthy. During a regular visit, you can expect your optometrist to perform the following tests to determine your eye health: peripheral vision test, the air puff test, pupillary reaction test, slit lamp test, visual acuity test and pupil dilation, however there is no mention of a 3D test. After watching the videos and learning more about stereopsis and strabismus:
Do you think checking 3D vision should be apart of the regular eye exam? Explain your answer.
What age do you think the optometrist should start testing for 3D vision? Why?
Visual Cliff Experiment – After watching the visual cliff experiment videos:
Original Visual Cliff Experiment –
Why do you think depth perception is something even young infants have? What are its benefits? Drawbacks?
What’s the youngest age you can recall that you knew falling would hurt you?
Which do you think is a better predictor of fear of heights, age or locomotive experience? Why?
If you were conducting a study on depth perception, what questions or topics would you want to investigate?
Explain the differences you see with one eye opposed to two eyes.
