SHORT STORY ANALYTICAL ESSAYThe goal of this essay is to demonstrate your critical engagement of one of the short stories assigned this semester as well as our classroom discussion of these texts. This essay, therefore, should not be a paper you create out of “thin air” but rather an intelligent response to both the texts and our classroom conversation. As our reading text states, “A useful way to start is to make a list of possible thesis statements based on the elements of [narrative] fiction: plot, characters, setting, point of view, style, and theme” (Lawn 520). Of course, you should also pay attention to imagery and symbolism. Some avenues of exploration include but are not limited to: – literary form (organization/structure, narration, inclusion/exclusion, etc.) – literary devices (epiphany, paradox, irony, metaphor, analogy, etc.) – context (what are the circumstances of a text’s production, dissemination, and reception? What is its historical, biographical, cultural, political, artistic background?)You can assume that your audience has read the story you are analyzing, so you should not simply resort to retelling the plot.
