Social constructs Links to an external site.can be defined as ideas or beliefs which a large number of people in a society have agreed are “true.” Though these constructs don’t represent objective reality or truth, they are thought of or internalized as “true” or “real” by the members of that society, and therefore these ideas have major effects on the lives of those who live in said society. Three social constructs that apply to this week’s reading are gender roles, beauty standards, and marriage. In a paragraph for each of the assigned texts, explain how each text demonstrates the way one of these social constructs confines and negatively effects the women. Provide a quote from each text that supports your discussion.
2. It’s natural for anyone who is trapped, confined, or imprisoned to desire escape. Though none of the women in the texts we read about for this week literally escape their confinement, one could argue that they figuratively escape their confinement. Explain how each woman figuratively escapes her confinement.
