Essential Guide to the Strategic Planning Process

May 7, 2021

In Step 4 of this project, you have the option to use a template to create your plan. You will integrate this template data into your final presentation.
Here are some links to potential planning tools, however, you may use any tool you prefer:
Essential Guide to the Strategic Planning Process (Links to an external site.)
Strategic Plan Form (Links to an external site.)
A strategic plan form is a template that helps an organization explain their plan to meet their corporate goals. This form is important regardless of whether you plan to seek out a business loan or investments. Strategic planning involves listing a mission statement as well as clearly documenting business goals.

Step 1: Select a global organization to analyze.
You may use your own organization, if sufficient and readily available data exists to do so effectively. Data sources may include internal and external publications about the organization, such as news articles, case studies, and books; publicly available documents from the organization, such as shareholder reports, press releases, web site information; and data gathered from interviews with key employees or leaders. If you do not use your own organization, you may choose a well-known global organization. In your introduction, discuss the importance of strategic leadership to the success of this organization.

Step 2: Identify a key leader within the organization that would be charged with strategic leadership (e.g., CEO, high level executive, etc.).
You will research this person and analyze their strategic leadership approach based on available information in both scholarly resources and popular press. Discuss specific global factors that influence the development and success of a strategic leadership approach in this organization, including cultural, legal, financial, and ethical considerations.

Step 3: Examine the current goals of the organization.
Look at company mission statements, vision statements and publicly stated goals. These are usually available on company web sites and annual shareholder reports. If they are not found there, inquire with the public relations or communications department in the organization.

Step 4: Create a strategic plan that incorporates one or more of these goals to be led by the leader you have chosen.
You will begin by drawing on the resources you used for your discussion on strategic planning in Week 6. You may take creative liberties in crafting your strategic plan, but the analysis should largely be drawn from research and plausible future directions for the organization.

Step 5: Analyze critically how the leader’s approach or the company’s strategy may need to be modified to achieve the goals at hand.
Refer back to the case studies in your text for reminders about how leadership and organizational strategy may need to be modified to achieve goals. Additionally, you will evaluate potential future implications of the leader’s strategic leadership approach and the implementation of the strategic plan on the local and global communities in which the organization operates.
