Essay: You must answer one of the following essay questions. To receive full credit, you must reference all the points in the question, use proper grammar, and use a proper essay format. All essays in this class must be at least five paragraphs. You must produce an introduction paragraph with a clear thesis statement, a series of three body paragraphs supporting the thesis with evidence, and a clear conclusion paragraph. All paragraphs should exceed four sentences in length. Additionally, your introduction paragraph must identify the historical theme of the question. Beyond the introduction, you should reference the theme, when practical, in the body paragraphs. See the Themes in History list. Failure to meet this minimum will result in a deduction of points. Additionally, all writing should be in your own words. The answers must come from the book, not the Internet. DO NOT COPY MATERIAL DIRECTLY FROM THE TEXTBOOK!!! DO NOT USE ANY SOURCE OTHER THAN THE TEXTBOOK UNLESS DIRECTED TO USE IT IN THE QUESTION. I would suggest that you review the material on effective paraphrasing in the “How to Answer Questions” document before doing any work. Plagiarism will result in a zero on the entire assignment. If you quote material from the textbook, it should be in quotation marks and be accompanied by the page number in parenthesis at the end of the sentence.

2. Trace the quest of African Americans for equal rights in this half of U.S. history. Dividing this course into the periods of 1877-1900, 1901-1945, and 1946 to the end of the Cold War, consider these points: who were the major leaders during each period and what did they purpose, what were the major events in each period, where major pieces of legislation passed during each period, what were the successes and failures of each, and what was the reaction by the majority population to these events? In your response, mention the chapter of the text you are using for each paragraph. Also, remember to cite pages when necessary.
