Essay Assignment Directions: Please read the directions on the proceeding page in your Essay Module in Canvas to answer the following prompt below.
Your Essay Assignment will consist of one essay (worth 100 points ) that will answer the prompt provided on the next page. Because this is an open-book essay you will be required to provide a complete MLA citation with your answer. If you do not include a complete MLA citation you will receive a zero for this assignment. Your test should be in your own words. Your answer will receive a zero if you provide any direct quotes, even if properly cited.
Essay Focus: This essay prompt is designed to not only test your historical knowledge but also your critical thinking skills. The essay will ask you to list the key causes of a historical event. Be sure to pay close attention to the number of items you are required to mention and the time frame that the question will limit you to. All answers can be found in the Class Focus PowerPoints or in the Canvas Research Module.
Essay Length: Your answer should be between 500 and 600 words in length. If your answer is less than 500 words or more than 600 words you will receive a zero. Please do not include any headers or your name in your answer. Your citation will NOT count towards your 500-word limit or 600-word maximum.
Sources: All answers should include a complete MLA citation included with your answer in the Canvas answer box provided. Your MLA citation should come at the END of your essay. Any answer without a complete MLA citation in the answer box will receive a zero. (Keep in mind this means all sources that you use including the Focus PowerPoints as well as the textbook must be cited. Examples of how to cite these types of sources can be found on the previous pages of this module.) Please remember that links, parenthetical citations, in-text citations, or simply providing a book title, or URL does not count as a complete MLA citation and will result in a zero. If your MLA citation is in the body of your essay and not at the end you will receive a zero.
EXAMPLE: MLA citation for a PowerPoint:
Author Last Name, Author First Name. “Presentation Title.”
Year.
*** For the Class Focus PowerPoints I am the Author and the PowerPoints were created in 2020.***
EXAMPLE: MLA Citation for an ebook:
Author Last name, Author First Name. Book Title. E-book ed., Publisher name, year of
publication.
*** Information for citing your eTextbook can be found in the Course Syllabus.***
IMPORTANT: I am aware that the Canvas answer box will not allow you to format a hanging indent. For the purpose of your exams, the hanging indent is therefore not required.
Direct Quotes: Your Essay answer must be in your own words. If you use any direct quotes, even if properly cited, you will receive a zero. If you are unsure of how to rephrase your source in your own words, otherwise known as paraphrasing please go here.
Note on attempts: You will be given one submission attempt. This means you will not be allowed a second submission so please be sure that your submission in Canvas is complete and correct. (For example, if you forget to include your MLA citations in your first submission you will not be allowed a resubmission, and I will not accept additions via email or through the assignment comments.) This assignment is not timed. However, I do accept late submissions.
Best 2 out of 3: Please remember that the Third Essay Assignment is purely optional because I will only keep your top two scores out of your three Assignments. This means that only your highest two scores out of the three assignments will be used to calculate your final overall course score. You are not required to take this assignment. If you are satisfied with your scores on your First and Second Essay Assignments, not taking this assignment will not harm your overall final grade. The third essay assignment is only there if you need it because you were not happy with your score on your First and Second Essay Assignments.
EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITY: To receive EIGHT extra Credit Points on this assignment please submit your Essay Assignment no later than 11:59 PM EST the Friday before the assignment due date listed in your Course Schedule.
Not on instructor assistance: I am always more than happy to answer any and all questions, however, due to the nature of this assignment I will be unable to answer content-related questions. For example, I would not be able to answer any questions related to what you plan to write in your essay. This would be similar to me providing you with an answer and would be unfair to your fellow classmates. I will however be more than happy to answer questions regarding the assignment directions.
Fine Print:
Please fully answer the prompt on the following page. If you provide an answer for a question not asked you will receive a zero.
Because this is an open-book test I cannot control your use of outside sources, therefore you will be required to provide a full MLA work cited citation stating where you found your information. Your citation should be provided in the Word document along with your essay and should be in proper and complete MLA format. Please note that this includes all information taken from the textbook or the Focus PowerPoints.
Your answer must be between 500 and 600 words. If you do not meet the 500-word minimum or you go over the 600-word maximum you will receive a zero on this assignment. Your citation will not count towards your 500-word minimum or your 600-word maximum.
You must directly answer the prompt provided above. If you write on a different topic you will receive a zero.
Your answer will receive a zero if you provide any direct quotes, even if properly cited.
