Essay Prompt: Slavery: How are we dealing with slavery today? Have we sufficiently atoned for what we did to Africans (and now to African Americans)? What impact does it have on our present? Have we come to terms with how this country was developed (using to such a large extent slaves and forced labor)? What do concepts of “race” have on our perception of the world today? What ideology forms the basis of this development? You do not have to answer all these questions like it is a quiz, but some things to think about when you write your essay. The Jeffery Robinson lecture would be essential to use for this option.
Thesis: Today, we’re still dealing with the effects of past slavery, especially for African Americans, the way we see race affects how society grows, so it’s important to really think about the ideas shaping our development.
The important thing is that you use the sources in this module extensively and delve into the implications presented by the material. In order to score an A on the essay, you will need to bring in at least 2 different sources into each paragraph.
A requirement of the essay is that you use in some way all three sources, Loewen, Zinn, and Chomsky.IF YOU DO NOT INCLUDE ALL THREE SOURCES, I WILL JUST RETURN IT TO YOU TO REVISE FOR MORE SUPPORT. So, as you are doing your reading for the next week and a half be thinking about and annotating for your selected theme, or, if you are not at that stage yet, annotate for parts of the reading that you find key to an understanding of the themes we are dealing with. You should familiarize yourself with the Prof Jon Tutorials on annotating online material to better utilize annotation for your essays. The Essay Organization Chart will help tremendously keep track of what you find.
A few words about paragraph length: Everything in an essay needs to be proportional, meaning right-sized for the length of the essay. For a 4 or 5 page essay, you would want your paragraphs to be at least 2/3 to a page long. They need to be that long to get in the support you need (at least two sources) and also your own argument. BUT paragraphs should not be much longer than that. You could have a two page paragraph in a 15 page essay because it would be right-sized for the project. And you need at least THREE topics to support your argument.

Does you use the PIE paragraph so that the argument is drawn down through the paragraphs in a clear and convincing manner especially at the end of your paragraphs?
Now move to the thesis statement at the end of the introduction. Does you take a stand. Determine if it is worded either too generally, too broadly, too narrowly, and that you have taken a perspective that includes your opinion. Remember, this is a critical element since an essay cannot pass without a thesis statement.
