Essay Four: The Compare and Contrast Essay – Signature Assignment
Page requirements: Write three full pages to four full pages (not including reference and title page).
Source requirements: The essay needs to have at least four
outside sources, but more may be necessary to adequately discuss the
differences and similarities of the people you are writing about. You
are highly encouraged to use all sources from the SJCD database.
Voice requirement: you need to write this essay in third person.
Important Note: You will write the essay completely
by yourself, but your whole group will use the same sources and have the
same reference page. If you want more than four outside sources that is
fine, but you must use at least four of the same outside sources. This
is not a group essay. Students need to write the essay by themselves.
Thus, every essay will be different, except for the same reference page.
The essay must be written in APA style, but you do not need section headers, an abstract, or a table of contents.
At least two of the sources must come from the SJCD database, and
the other two sources must come from credible sites, such as ones that
end in org, edu, or gov. You are highly encouraged to use all sources
from the SJCD database.
Compare and contrast two famous people with similar backgrounds who
achieved success. Discuss what these people did to overcome their
challenges and subtly persuade the audience that perseverance matters.
Possibilities include two famous African Americans in politics,
sports, or something else. You can also compare and contrast famous
Asians, South Americans, Europeans, LGBTQ members, individuals with
disabilities, or any two people with similar backgrounds but who
overcame obstacles in some way or another. The sports’ world is full of
examples, as is the political theater, the business world, and many
other professions.
Find two people that your entire group can relate to in one form or another.
