Essay #4 (using a theme to connect multiple texts)
750-1000 words
Requirements
There should be at least four paragraphs (including one intro., two body paragraphs, and a conclusion) in your essay and the thesis should be the last sentence of your first paragraph. The thesis should have at least two clear points, each of which relates specifically to one of your body paragraphs. Failure to follow this simple format will result in the deduction of a letter grade.
Outline
Paragraph #1: Introduction and thesis
Paragraph #2: Text #1
Paragraph #3: Text #2
Paragraph #4: Conclusion
For this assignment, I will be looking at grammar, punctuation, coherence, diction, organization, and the amount of support you place within your essay. The essay should be seamless, with a logical order of ideas and supporting evidence. This also means that your work should be free of awkward sentences and grammatical errors.
Audience
Your audience is the academic community, represented by me. This means that your essay should adhere to the formality that college writing entails. You will be penalized for slang and colloquial expressions.
TOPIC:
Using the two texts, “A Modest Proposal” and “Letter from Birmingham Jail,” students must analyze two different approaches in dealing with social injustices. “A Modest Proposal” seems to be trying to argue against the horrific conditions of the working class in the United Kingdom by giving a scathing satire, entirely meant to shock and offend. “Letter from Birmingham Jail” seems to advocate a more hands-on approach to correcting many of the social ills to which the African-American public is subject in the United States. Which method do you feel is more effective and why? Do not use first person in this essay; try to support your ideas with textual evidence and quotes. An example thesis might say that, “’Letter from Birmingham Jail’ offers a more viable approach to social change than ‘A Modest Proposal.’”
