Essay #3: Analyzing Ethical, Logical, and Emotional Appeals in Advertisements or Articles
Please choose one of the options below.
Analyze ethical, logical, and emotional appeals in one or more advertisements. The advertisement can be taken from a newspaper, magazine, or website. Upload the advertisement as a separate document to the appropriate Drop Box folder. If the advertisement is a video, upload a separate document to the Drop Box with a link to the advertisement.
In your discussion of the advertisement, consider which appeals the ad relies on most—ethical, logical, or emotional appeals. Also, consider how effective the ad is in convincing its target audience. Do you see any fallacious or improper ethical, logical, or emotional appeals? If so, what are they, and why are they fallacious or improper? We will be discussing some sample ads in class, and you can write about them if you wish.
How to cite an ad in MLA Style (quoted from the MLA Website):
To cite an advertisement in a print magazine, follow the MLA format template. Provide the title of the advertisement or a descriiption in place of a title. Then provide the name of the magazine in the “Title of container” slot, followed by the date of the issue and the page number on which the advertisement appears:
Advertisement for Head and Shoulders. Newsweek, 17 Mar. 2008, p. 2.
To cite a digital advertisement, provide the URL in place of a page number. If the advertisement is a pop-up ad, provide this information in the optional-element slot at the end of the entry.
“Get the Best of The New Yorker.” The New Yorker, 10 Jan. 2017, www.newyorker.com. Pop-up ad.
Analyze ethical, logical and emotional appeals in an article or essay of no longer than 5000 words. The article or essay can be one of the sources you used in your Annotated Bibliography. If the article is not taken from materials on the content page of our course, please upload it as a separate attachment to the appropriate Drop Box in D2L.
In your discussion of the article, consider which appeals the ad relies on most—ethical, logical, or emotional appeals. Also, consider how effective the article is in convincing its target audience. Do you see any fallacious or improper ethical, logical, or emotional appeals? If so, what are they, and why are they fallacious or improper?
