Essay 1: due Friday 2/23, @ 11:59pm. Think of an older adult you know well. Would
you describe his/her physiological aging as normative, optimal (successful), or
pathological? Use evidence from Chapters 3 & 4 to support your claim.
For both topics, integration of text material is key! You should be incorporating text
information to back up each point you illustrate with your personal examples. Papers
that receive an “A” will be well-written (no grammatical and spelling errors), avoid
quotes (paraphrase and cite instead), include a balance of personal and text content
(with page numbers following text content), and transition seamlessly between personal
and text information. Below are two examples of discussing grandparents with arthritis,
but one is well-integrated with a correct citation. The other is not as strong.
Weak Example: My grandfather Tom has worked with his hands all of his life but has
seen no overall harm to his joints (p. 87).
**If I go to page 87, I won’t see anything about Tom’s hands. Avoid adding a citation to
a personal description. Be clear about the scientific fact(s) being cited.
Strong Example: My grandma has arthritis in her hands after years of gardening, but
this is common in older adults; as people age, their joints are more likely to deteriorate
(p. 88).
**This sentence gets at the same point, but you can see the clear differentiation
between personal description and scientific fact.
