ePortfolio Assignment
Artists, architects, and other professionals often gather work to showcase various skills; these portfolios, curated to demonstrate proficiency in a particular field, allow the creator along with invited viewers to appreciate progress made over the course of a semester or career. Increasingly, students and professionals highlight key aspects of their professional and academic lives in portfolios displayed electronically. For this final assignment, you will create an electronic portfolio to display the rhetorical progress you have made this semester. The portfolio will contain 5-7 rhetorical artifacts. The assignment will feature these steps:
Gather:
Review the semester’s work, paying attention to assigned readings and corresponding exercises, general entries in your Commonplace Book (CPB), assigned papers, writing labs, and discussion posts, as well as your general observations of language use. Locate key lessons from the semester. You must include at least two lessons learned from Clark and at least one from Hacker, Lanham, or Williams.
Reflect and Select:
After reviewing the theories and strategies learned over the semester, select 5-7 rhetorical artifacts—sentences, paragraphs, passages, visual depictions—that demonstrate your understanding of the rhetorical principle learned. These artifacts or examples may come from your own writing, your Commonplace Book entries, or reading you have done outside of class. (You may not include examples selected and analyzed by Clark, Williams, Lanham, or Hacker.)
Assemble the Document:
For each of the artifacts provide:
Description: Choose an artifact (a sentence, paragraph, passage, or visual image from your work or the work or others) and provide a brief description of the artifact and its context.
Analysis: Explain how this artifact demonstrates or fails to demonstrate the rhetorical principles featured in Lanham, Clark, Hacker or Williams. Several of your CPB exercises ask you to apply the advice offered in the assigned readings. You may draw from these CPB exercises and expand upon them for this assignment. You may also move beyond the CPB assignments and include independent observations of how the rhetorical principles work in particular artifacts.
Evaluate: Consider how this writing skill or approach may serve you in future endeavors: writing research grants, applications for graduate school, memoranda of understanding, technical reports, and even thank you notes to relatives for graduation gifts!
You may present these three steps either as distinct parts or blended.
