ENGL 0133 Essay Five Instructions
Due Date: April 20th, 2024, 11:59 PM
Prompt: The main action of this play centers around King Lear giving away his kingdom to his three daughters. Following the outline below, please write a 2.5-page essay over King Lear’s decision, his daughter’s varied reactions, and the theme of fathers and their children in the play.
Introduction: Describe the setting and action of the play; write a thesis that lists the subject of each paragraph and makes an argument.
Paragraph 1: Why might Lear decide to ask his daughters this question?
Paragraph 2: Why do Reagan and Goneril react the way that they did? Is this right or is this wrong? (Make sure to see both sides!)
Paragraph 3: Why does Cordelia react the way that she does? Does she love her father or is she being cruel?
Paragraph 4: A sub-plot in this play is The Duke of Gloucester and his two sons. Please describe how Gloucester treats his two sons and reflect on why Shakespeare might show us two examples of parents and their relationship with their children.
Conclusion: Sum up the arguments that you have been making in this essay.
As you write, be sure to quote at least one piece of evidence for each paragraph. Cite this quote.
Please include at least two citations per paragraph, not including the quote that you cite.
Please use Chicago style citations.
We have reviewed this in class.
There is a ‘Citation Help’ document on Blackboard.

AI Policy (Copied Directly from Syllabus)
Academic Integrity: This course assumes that work submitted by students—all process work, drafts, low stakes writing, final versions, and all other submissions—will be generated by the students themselves, working individually or in instructor permitted groups. This means that the following are considered violations of academic integrity: a student has another person/entity do the writing of any portion of an assignment for them, which includes hiring a person or a company to write essays and drafts and/or other assignments, research-based or otherwise, and using artificial intelligence platforms like ChatGPT.
Plagiarism: If you submit work other than your own, I will consider the work plagiarized. Plagiarism may result in any or all of the following penalties: a zero for the assignment, an “F” for the course, or an administrative withdrawal from school.
Use of Artificial Intelligence also counts as plagiarism. All essays will be run through ChatGPTZero before grading. Essays which garner above an 80% probability will be given an automatic zero. Essays between 45% and 79% will be graded carefully and students may be asked to complete an alternative assignment. Please note that using spell check software (such as Grammarly) outside of what Word or Google Docs provides is technically AI, and will bump your AI probability score up.
Grades: If a student is given an F on an assignment, they must meet with the professor within a week of receiving the grade. Subsequent infractions will result in either expulsion from the class or the institution. Due to FERPA regulations, I cannot discuss grades over email. I am happy to meet with students outside of class time.
