Employment Search Documents Portfolio Assignment Instructions
Goal: To provide students an opportunity to utilize employment search document
knowledge in the creation of sample documents for inclusion in a portfolio of
coursework.
Background: While not considered traditional business documents, the various letters,
resumes, and other documents created while searching for employment are incredibly
important in the business world. These documents serve to show a potential employer
their first glimpse into whom they might be hiring and become the first entries into a new
employee’s human resources file. As always, one of the best ways to develop these
document creation skills is by practicing. This assignment gives students the
opportunity to practice by creating a variety of employment documents in response to a
job listing of their selection that relates to their major and future employment plans. This
assessment will be used to assess student learning of SLO3: At least 70% of students
will be able to analyze a job listing and develop professional employment search
documents at least 70% of the time.
Instructions: Search Indeed.com or Monster.com for a job listing that aligns with your
current major and matches your future career goals. After you’ve found the listing you
want to work with, copy and paste the job listing into a document or print the listing to a
pdf file for submission. Once you’ve found your job listing, you will 1. Draft an email
asking to schedule an interview appointment, and 2. create a selection of job
search related documents. Additionally, write out 50 words or less what you will
say in a follow up voicemail.
For the email, include your name, the name of the position you are applying for and the
job listing code (if there is one), and a day/date/time when you would like to schedule
the appointment for the interview.
The job search related documents that you will create include:
1. a cover letter that has been tailored to the job listing you’ve selected
2. a resume that includes appropriate information and has been tailored to the job
listing
3. a short email thanking the interviewer for their time and the interview
4. a short email accepting the offered position
You will want to research and find out what information is currently considered standard
in a resume (for example, references are no longer included or mentioned in a resume).
Ideally, these documents will be a starting point in creating the documents that you will
use when you leave ASU and look for future employment as well as artifacts that you
could include in a portfolio of your coursework to show to others in the future. Make sure
your documents are professional and polished!

Each document should be submitted in GaView. To do so you can go to Assessments,
then Assignments, and then click on the name of the dropbox that matches the scenario
(for example, put the cover letter in the dropbox named Cover Letter).
Important Information to Maximize Your Grade: Each document should be formatted
appropriately based on the examples included in the course content. The grade for this
assessment will be based on formatting and adhering to good business writing
principles (avoiding wordiness, good grammar and spelling, appropriate tone and voice
for the situation, etc.)
Examples: Examples can be found in the Document Templates folder in the START
HERE module.
Rubric: This assessment will be graded using the School of Business Assurance of
Learning Written Communication rubric. Each of the 4 documents will be reviewed and
graded individually with this rubric, which can be found on the last page of this
document.
The voicemail document will receive full-credit if it is clear/easy to understand and
includes the required information. It will receive ½ credit if it is clear but missing some information or is unclear/unprofessional but contains all information. Voicemail will
receive no credit if it is hard to understand and missing information.
