Ellen Schrecker and Phillip Deery argue in The Age of McCarthyism 3d Edition that the term McCarthyism is a misnomer because the anti-communist movement was much bigger than just the antics of the Wisconsin Senator. Your assignment is to illustrate how this was the case by making an historical argument (in answer to the two questions below), and supporting that argument with specific examples from historical documents. YOU MUST USE THE 3d EDITION TO COMPLETE THIS ASSIGNMENT.
Assignment Question
To what extent was Senator Joseph McCarthy central to McCarthyism? If there had been no McCarthy, would McCarthyism have been substantially different?
To answer this question, you must draw on examples from throughout the book per the requirements below:
Part 1 – Introduction
Provides a good historical narrative of the anti-Communist Movement. You are allowed to draw on this section for as many examples as you need, BUT you are also required to draw on the documents (not the Editor Summary of the documents) listed below.
Part 2 – The Documents
Chs. 3, 5, 10, and 12 – at least ONE example from a document in EACH chapter.
Chs. 13 and 14 – at least ONE example from a document in EITHER chapter.
Chs. 19 (docs 39/40) and 20 – at least TWO examples in total from any document in these two chapters (both examples CANNOT be from the same document).
LET ME STRESS that if you cite only the Editor’s Summary Introduction to each document, you will not receive credit for citing that document. A citation of the introduction to the document does not show me that you read the document.
