DQ 1. Compare and contrast at least three (3) of Gardener’s Tasks of Leadership with Bleich’s Tasks of Management in your textbook and include an example of each task. (Students with last name beginning with A – M).
To compare and contrast the similarities and differences between the tasks of leadership and management, we must first understand the needed task of each role. Leading and managing both require making decisions and taking the appropriate action. The tasks of leadership inspires, motivates, and ensures the well-being of the team members. The tasks of managers deals more with planning, organization, coordinating team actions, and directing people and departments. Leaders tend to set their eyes on the bigger picture, while managers put all the pieces of the puzzle together (Yoder-Wise, 2015).
Gardener’s first Tasks of Leadership discussed is the Envisioning Goals Task, it helps patients to set their eyes on the bigger picture or end goal of their healthcare journey. For example, a patient may envision walking again. Bleich’s Tasks of Management-Task 4 is to devise and communicate a big picture plan that emphasizes the the division of work and complexity to obtain the goals. Gardener’s second Task discussed is the Achieving Workable Unity Task, its goal is to assist staff members in achieving optimal functioning to avoid, diminish, or resolve conflict so the big picture can be achieved.
For example, conflict resolution mandatory training modules for employees are used in most hospital facilities. Bleich’s Tasks of Management-Task 5 is to eliminate barriers and obstacles that get in the way of work effectiveness. Gardener’s third Task discussed is the Renewing Task, its goal is to generate good energy within the team and focus on the shared vision. For example, leaders should take time to celebrate individual team members accomplishments and give positive feedback.
Bleich’s Tasks of Management-Task 7 is to offer rewards and recognition to teams and individual team members (Yoder-Wise, 2015).
