You must choose a play from our textbook—either the fourth or fifth editions—or one that I assigned in
the class pack so that I have an easy-to-consult copy.
Tell your audience what the major themes of the work are (there may only be one), as well as discussing
other relevant elements that the author uses (symbolism, imagery, metaphor, and so on). In the body,
focus on the way the elements used by the author support your idea of what the theme is. Do more than
just summarize the play. Review the section on close reading in the class pack.
The body of this essay should be a minimum of 1,000 of your own words and in MLA format. (When you
do a word count, exclude direct quotations). Do not plagiarize from outside sources. If you use outside
sources, you must cite them, but I prefer your own analysis. Include a works cited page (it should be
called Work Cited if only one work is on it.) See “Writing about Plays,” pp. 98-104 in Literature: A
