Each student will conduct a personal, face-to-face interview with a district/school administrator regarding a school law or diversity issue they have had to deal with recently. After that, the student will reflect on the issue, including how the student would have handled the situation. Then the student will prepare a written report of that interview, according to the guidelines given below.
The report should be divided into the following sections:
“Heading”: the name and title of the person you interviewed, and the date of the interview.
“Facts”: a description of the key facts that created the issue, the actions which school personnel took to resolve the issue and the results, and, if any, the legal proceedings that have occurred regarding the issue (who filed what, where, alleging what, etc.).
“Issue”: a concise statement (in one sentence posed as a question) of the main legal issue that must be answered to resolve the situation. This statement should be crafted by the student, not the individual interviewed.
“Discussion”: a discussion of the applicable legal principles (including citing applicable statutes and court decisions) that are relevant in resolving that issue, and your conclusion about how that issue should have been resolved based on those legal principles. This discussion should be in addition to the legal principles that were actually applied to the issue by the parties involved (e.g., what the parties argued in a lawsuit).
Heading: Dr. Hubbard, Superintendent, April 3, 2024.
Facts: In September 2022, a local community member filed a formal grievance against a group of teachers who sponsored district-approved Diversity Clubs at the 3 local elementary schools and middle school. In this grievance, the community member alleged that the group of teachers were bullying her because of their participation on a Facebook community page outside of school using their own personal Facebook accounts. The grievance said that the teachers were cyberbullying her because they were solely members of a Facebook community page that she did not agree with. This community member contacted the district and wanted the teachers to be fired for their membership on the Facebook page.
Upon investigation, the group of teachers were cleared of any wrong doing as they have never interacted, met, or spoken with the community member who filed the formal grievance.
