Each of the three textbook authors serves as faculty in Seaver College at Pepperdine University, a private research university affiliated with the churches of Christ. The authors wrote the textbook from a clinical psychologist’s perspective; however, they mention how varied religious views and practices shape our thoughts on family and family violence.
The attached article from Bierman (2005) discusses how childhood trauma impacts adult religiosity and spirituality. The author does not subscribe to any religious affiliation over another, as this was not a variable studied. However, the maltreatment source is crucial for the effects of physical and emotional maltreatment on religiosity. Bierman (2005) contends his research was “the first time that a national probability sample has been used to examine the effects of physical and emotional forms of child maltreatment on adult religiosity and spirituality” (p. 357).
Instructions: In completing this week’s assignment, address the following questions:
1) Why do you believe that the impact of childhood trauma and adult religiosity or spirituality has not been well studied?
(examples: difficulty operational variables, perceived barriers by victims, etc…)
2) What are current family prevention and family violence treatment programs offered in your faith community?
3) Within your faith community, what are some things you could become involved in to support families?
