Each essay response will be graded on the basis of 45 points for the clarity and coherence of the argument, supporting evidence provided, critical thinking, syntax, and formatting. The objective is to demonstrate comprehension of the key concepts and capacity to think across texts.
Essay questions – you must respond to both of the questions.
A synthesis essay involves the following: you develop a thesis statement that places the topic at the centre. A synthesis essay focuses on course materials (assigned readings, lecture notes, additional learning materials), develops an argument, and is supported by evidence from the course materials.
You must follow the formal essay format, including introductory and concluding paragraphs. You should expect that each essay will be approximately 4 pages long (1000 words, double-spaced). The inclusion of point-form lists will not be accepted. You do not need a title page.
Exam questions (answer both)
We have explored a number of factors that are associated with the transformation of the terms and conditions of work at the end of the 20th and beginning of the 21st centuries. Using all of the following texts: Bell (1973), Rifkin (1995), Hochschild (2012), Stasiulis and Bakan (2006), Cranford et al (2006), and Fox and Sugiman (2006), develop an argument about precariousness. Incorporate a discussion of how Anna Braddon’s union work attempts to intervene in these types of dynamics. (45 marks/15%)
Ray’s (2019) text presents a theory of racialized organizations. Describe Weber’s (1964) theory of organizations, Ritzer’s (2004) contributions to the contemporary literature on the operation of organizations, and explain the insights to these dynamics brought by Ray (2019). (45 marks/15%)
Be attentive to the use of in-text citations, but you do not need to include a bibliography for any of the course texts, lectures. Any additional scholarly materials must be identified in a bibliography.
