Dyslexia falls under the umbrella of Learning Disabilities in the High Incidence

April 5, 2024

Dyslexia falls under the umbrella of Learning Disabilities in the High Incidence category. It has been incorrectly used as a general term to identify individuals with reading difficulties. After reviewing the readings and resources in Module 5, brain and neurological factors for processing two-dimensional print are at the source of the etiology of dyslexia and specific interventions are needed in order for those individuals to access and give meaning to ideas put into print. These interventions are referred to as Orton Gillingham Approaches to teaching reading and they are not synonymous with best practices in Reading.
Respond to the following questions:
* How have the readings and resources informed/added to your knowledge of dyslexia in both its causes and interventions?
* Have these resources provided you with knowledge to refer a student with reading difficulties for dyslexia screening? Do you know your options for dyslexia screenings and referrals in your school or organization?
* How have the readings and resources expanded your knowledge of how you would support a student with dyslexia?
* There are a variety of Orton-Gillingham based programs available for use with dyslexic students such as the Wilson Reading Program, Lindamood-Bell, Barton Reading and software-based programs such as Earobics, Fast ForWord and many more. These programs require training and some provide certification opportunities. Most reading specialists in schools do not have this training through their discipline and the training is more likely to be found among Special Education teachers. Are you aware of opportunities for your own personal training in OG approaches? Discuss how you would support your SPED teachers in becoming a certified OG teacher or how you would approach obtaining certification for yourself.
